Mekong Trails

Get the ‘inside story’ on South East Asia’s greatest waterway on this touring style journey along the Mekong River. From Huay Xai near the ‘Golden Triangle’ frontier we take a cruise down the Mekong River to spiritual Luang Prabang for some relaxed sightseeing at this unique UNESCO World Heritage town. We fly to Pakse where we will explore the 'Thousand Islands' area of the Mekong by boat, and also visit Don Khone Island. We have also included a visit to Paksong and a drive over the Bolaven Plateau before flying to Siem Reap to visit the crowning jewel of Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat where we conclude our journey.

Itinerary at a glance
Day 1 Arrive Chiang Rai
Met on arrival and transfer to hotel. The tour commences with dinner tonight.

Day 2 Chiang Rai
Sightseeing today around Chiang Rai including a walking tour to visit temples, the main market, old jail and Hill Tribe Museum. We will also drive a short way out of the city to visit the White Temple and conclude the day at the night bazaar.

Day 3 To Xuay Xai
A 2.5hr drive to the Lao border this morning, cross the Mekong via the Friendship Bridge and, complete border formalities and transfer to our hotel on the bank of the Mekong River.

Day 4 By boat to Pakbeng
This morning, transfer to Luang Say boat for our two day cruise down the Mekong River. There is plenty to see along the way before arriving at Pakbeng late afternoon. Overnight and dinner at the Luang Say Lodge.

Day 5 Boat to Luang Prabang
Relaxing breakfast on the terrace overlooking the river (or an early visit the nearby market) before boarding the boat. First stop today is a hilltribe village to watch the traditional process of Lao whisky production. Next stop is Pak Ou village to visit the Tam Thing Caves of a Thousand Buddhas. Arrive in Luang Prabang late afternoon.

Day 6 Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang town is a UNESCO World heritage site. Sightseeing today will include Wat Visoun, Wat Aham and Wat Xieng Thong the crowning jewel of all the monasteries and temples in the city. Also visit the National Museum (Royal Palace) and an evening visit to the night market

Day 7 Luang Prabang
Today visit Kuang Si waterfalls and the nearby Butterfly Park. We will also visit the Asian Brown Bear Recovery Centre. Later today time to wander down the main street of Luang Prabang, stopping at some of the many temples that line the street. This evening climb the 328 to Mount Phousi for sunset views.

Day 8 To Pakse
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Pakse. Transfer to hotel.

Day 9 Pakse
Pakse was founded by the French in 1905 as an administrative post. We'll spend the day exploring the hightlights of the town including the local market, temples and Heritage Museum.

Day 10 To Paksong
Drive to Paksong (40mins), then by jeep across the Bolaven Plateau home to many ethnic minorities. En route visit some of the villages we pass and also one of the coffee or tea plantations that dot the plateau. We will also stop at one of the spectacular waterfalls that the area is known for.

Day 11 Paksong
A full day on the 'coffee trail'. Visit villages with traditional longhouses and Tad Say waterfall.

Day 12 To Don Khone
By vehicle along the east bank of the Mekong, then by boat to Don Knone Island in the heart of the Mekong's "Thousand Islands". Transfer to our hotel.

Day 13 Don Khone
Travel by boat to visit Don Det island known for the cultivation of coconut, bamboo and kapok. Visit Ban Khon Village, Li Phi Falls, and as we travel along the Mekong watch out for the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin.

Day 14 To Pakse
Return by boat and road to Pakse. En route we will visit the largest waterfall in SE Asia - Khone Phapheng where the entire Mekong with all its force, cascades down curving stone outcrops.

Day 15 To Siem Reap
Relaxing morning before transfer to airport for flight to Siem Reap. Complete Cambodian border formaliities before transferring to our hotel in the old town.

Day 16 Siem Reap
A full day sightseeing to include the crowning jewel of Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat. We will also visit other monuments in this area and conclude the day watching the sun set from the upper terraces of an ancient temple.

Day 17 Siem Reap
Today we will visit Angkor Thom, jungle clad Ta Prohm and other spectacular temples.

Day 18 Depart
Transfer to airport for departure flight.
