Get way off the beaten track with us in November on this discovery style journey following the overland trade route from the Ayeyarwaddy to the Brahmaputra. Come prepared for an adventure as we explore Myanmar’s wonderful cultural heritage and stunning scenery on the historic trail to the Chindwin River and beyond, across hitherto closed frontiers to Imphal in India’s Manipur State. The spectacular annual Hornbill Festival is a key event on our itinerary in Nagaland as we make our way across the tea estates towards Kaziranga National Park in the Bramaphutra valley. Itinerary at a glance
Day 1 Commence Yangon
Met on arrival and transfer to hotel. The tour commences with dinner tonight.
Day 2 Yangon
Sightseeing in Yangon including a visit to the river port, the downtown heritage area and Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market). Late afternoon visit to Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda reclining Buddha and sunset visit to the stunning Shwedagon Pagoda.
Day 3 To Bagan
An early departure this morning by flight to Bagan. Check into the hotel for breakfast before setting out for a full day sightseeing of Bagan archaeological zone, including a visit to a Lacquer ware factory. This evening return to the pagoda fields for sunset.
Day 4 To Inle Lake
First thing this morning depart by flight to Heho and transfer by road and longtail boat to the floating hotel on the lake. Commence sightseeing after lunch by longtail boat to visit craft villages and explore the waterways and gardens around the Lake.
Day 5 Inle Lake
Today we plan to visit Indein and the old pagodas. If the "Five Day" market is scheduled for Indein today time to visit the market or a short walk on a village path at Indein.
Day 6 To Mandalay
Leisurely start to the day before transferring back to Heho for the short flight to Mandalay.
Day 7 Mandalay
Full day sightseeing today to include the ancient Teak Palace, Kuthodaw Pagoda. Mahi Muni Pagoda, a gold leaf workshop, Buddha carving street and the National Handicrafts Centre, a veritable Aladdin's cave of puppets. Conclude the day watching the sun set over the Mandalay Plains from Mandalay Hill.
Day 8 To Monywa
Depart for 140km drive west to Monywa on the Chindwin River. At Monywa we plan to visit Mohnyin Thambuddhei Paya, a Buddhist temple built in 1303 on the pattern of Indonesia's Borobudur.
Day 9 to Kale
Today cross the Chindwin River and follow secondary roads across the hills to Kale.
Day 10 to Tamu
The route today follows the Myittha River up stream along the frontier with India's Manipur state to the busy border town of Tamu-Moreh. Again the distance isn't great, but road conditions will dictate progress.
Day 11 To Imphal
Cross the Moreh border to Indian this morning. Meet the Indian guide and transport and drive to Imphal.
Day 12 Imphal
This morning visit the WW II Cemetery at Dewlahland and Hatta. Also visit Kangla Fort, Shahid Minar, Kangla Museum. Later attend Sangai Festival.
Day 13 To Kohima
AM visit Shree Shree Govindajee Temple. Later drive to Kohima to visit WW II Cemetary. Later today drive to Kohima city.
Day 14 Kohima
Full day visit to Kisama Naga Heritage village to join the Hornbill Festival. This Festival is a major event this week.
Day 15 To Kaziranga
This morning visit the festival grounds before departing for the 5 - 6 hrs drive to Kazirangi National Park.
Day 16 Kaziranga National Park
Early morning enjoy Elephant safari to visit central range of the park. Return to hotel for breakfast and relax. This afternoon take a Jeep safari into the park.
Day 17 To Guwahati
This morning drive to Guwahati. This afternoon visit the Kamakhya Temple, a shakti temple on Nilachal Hill. This is an important pilgrimage site for Hindu and Tantric worshippers.
day 18 Depart
Transfer to Guwahati airport to connect with homeward flights.
