Itinerary at a glance
Day 1 - Arrive Colombo
Arrive in Colombo and transfer to the hotel in nearby Negambo fishing village.

Day 2 - to Anuradhapura
This morning set out with a local naturalist for a walk on the Ranweli Nature Trail. After lunch we drive to Anuradhapura via Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

Day 3 - Anuradhapura
Today we have the full day to explore Anuradhapura, the most celebrated of Sri Lanka's ancient cities. We visit Mihinthale Temple in Mihintale and other sites

Day 4 - to Trincomalee
No need to start early today for the 110km drive to the historic port city of Trincomalee. We plan to depart mid morning and take a late lunch in Trincomalee. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 5 - Trincomalee
Full day sightseeing today. This city is home to the famous Tamil Koneswaram temple and has been a sea port that has played a major role in the maritime and international trading history of Sri Lanka.

Day 6 - to Polonnaruwa
This morning drive to Polonnaruwa for a full day sightseeing of this World Heritage site, once the 2nd capital city of Sri Lanka built in the 11th and 12th centuries AD.

Day 7 - to Dambulla
Today we visit the ancient sites of Sigirya rock fortress and Minneriya along the way to Dambulla where we will overnight and take an evening wildlife safari in the Minneriya National Park

Day 8 - to Kandy
This morning we plan to visit the 1st century BC Dambulla cave temple. Lunch en route to Matale where we will stop at the Matale spice gardens for a demonstration. Cultural show in Kandy tonight.

Day 9 - Kandy
Today we'll explore the World Heritage sites of 'old' Kandy and have lunch at a hill side restaurant near the village of Peradeniya at the stunningly diverse Botanical garden.

Day 10 - to Nuwara Eliya
To Nuwara Eliya - This morning to the railway station for the local train to Nuwara Elia. The distance isn't great but this is one of the most scenic rail journeys in South Asia.

Day 11 - to Belihul Oya
Today set out by road for the drive to Horton Plains National Park where we plan to spend the morning and walk to 'Worlds End', a spectacular escarpment with a 1500m vertical drop.

Day 12 - to Ella
We have another opportunity to walk on a nature trail in scenic Belihul Oya before continuing through the central highlands to Ella near the scenic Ella Gap and Ella Falls.

Day 13 - to Yala National Park
This morning we plan to take an easy countryside walk on this lovely southeast corner of the highlands before heading down country towards the Yala National Park. This evening we will make a wildlife safari in the National Park.

Day 14 - Yala
For the next two days we will have time to explore Yala National Park and take both morning and evening wildlife watching safaris.

Day 15 - Yala
Free time plus wildlife watching safaris.

Day 16 - to Kolgalla
We are off to the historic Dutch trading port of Galle today. There will be time to visit the old fort and sites in the historic town before continuing to the beach resort of Kolgalla to overnight

Day 17 - to Colombo and conclude
It is a quick trip along the coastal highway to Colombo. We'll spend the rest of the day city sightseeing before evening transfer to the airport for departure.
